3 Phases of Producing Video Content: How the sausage gets made
In all successfully produced and exhibited video content, the 3 Phases of Producing Video Content (Pre-Production, Production and Post Production) are absolutely necessary. In this post we break them down and add a little sugar and spice too, ooh…
.
Pre-Production -THIS GENERALLY INVOLVES DIGITAL CRAYONS, ALCOHOL, CARING AND 90’s HIP HOP REFERENCES
Pre-production encompasses all the research, pre-planning, scripting, designing and scheduling and quality client time that’s necessary to build the platforms for creative success before we delve into production and post-production.
We work with all key stakeholders to sort out the core messaging, narrative structure, brand alignment, style, look and pacing as they all relate to the videos being produced. The crucial purpose of the pre-production phase is to arrive at an approved Creative Approach and Production Strategy for the project(s). It’s also the best time to figure out if we really like each other and if we want to be Facebook friends.
We work through storyboards. We write scripts. We lineup all crewing. We setup casting and usage, talent agency terms/fees. We scout locations. We schedule and budget. We drink. We cackle and snort.
Production – NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH MANUFACTURING. WE DON’T DO THAT (YET)
In the production phase we do most of the “doing” for a video. During production we are either in-production shooting and capturing footage or in the case of animation and motion graphics work we are designing, building and animating.
We can produce video content for all levels of production values and all levels of exhibition and distribution channels. We shoot in SD, HD, UHD, 2K, 4K and NoK. We animate in 2D and 3D. We shoot on green screens. We shoot with drones. We shoot on mountains. We shoot in valleys. We don’t shoot wedding videos, cat videos, frat videos, fat videos or fat cat snapchat videos (yet)
It is part of our business model to be constantly working with and meeting with Directors, Designers, DPs, Editors and other nefarious creative types in Denver and other markets. We want to know as many ultra creative people as possible so long as they are (in no particular order): relatively sane, breathing, freelance, nice, considerate, not under indictment. We’re only as good as the talent we surround ourselves with.
Through these relationships we have access to the best and brightest in our market and beyond. We have the best tools for the job, no matter the job. This helps us meet the needs of the project better than if we were tied to specific internal commitments.
Post Production – NOW THAT WE HAVE ALL THE INGREDIENTS, LET’S PUT THEM TOGETHER. LIKE SAUSAGE.
The final phase of our capabilities involves Post-Production. All the work surrounding the editing, voice over recording, sound effects, sound editing, sound design, color correction, graphics and technical final deliverables lives in this phase.
This is where it all comes together. This is where a small team with really expensive computers and expensive software start making things move. In our 4 edit bays, our 2 audio suites and our 1 color correction suite we pluck, trim, nip, brush, blush and sweeten the footage, the graphics, and the sound; lifting the project to a new level.
We work through multiple iterations of the edit for each video and present them for review; changing and revising each video based on feedback until we arrive at the “final version”. Once we have a “final version” we work through all the finishing (audio sweetening and color correction) to arrive at final deliverables that we then send out in the world to soar. It’s like giving birth to little video babies.
